It’s 10:45pm in Southern California and only the lights outside of every house are on. Inside 205 Lamplighter Lane, a one story house, all is quiet, except for the room down the hall. There are 3 bedrooms in the entire house. The first room contains a 16 year old boy with curly brown hair and eyes blue as ice. The room across from his usually contains a 40 year old man with brown hair and blue-grey eyes. Tonight the room is empty and the bed is made due to the man working late.
The last room is a room for a princess. It was pink and a there was a princess castle on the wall by the bed. It has a light pink carpet and everything was in its place. In the far corner of the room was a pink canopy bed. A little girl, around 7 years old, was tucked in her bed. However she was not sleeping peacefully. She was tossing and turning. There was sweat gathering on her forehead making her hair stick to her face.
The little girl suddenly sat up breathing heavily. She brought a hand to her face and felt that it was damp. Her clothes were sticking to her body. She kicked off her covers and got out of her bed. With her blanket in hand she made her way over to her bedroom door. She opened her door and walked down the hall to her dad’s room. She opened the door to his room only to find his bed empty. Her lips trembled; she was feeling worse than before.
Her vision was going in and out. She quickly walked out of her dad’s room stopping every so often to regain her vision. She stumbled across the hall to her brother’s room. Her breath was coming out in short gasps. Her chest felt tight. She felt like crying. She knocked softly on her brother’s door. That was the only strength that she could muster up. Her brother was a heavy sleeper. She banged harder on the door before leaning against the door exhausted.
Inside the room, the 16 year old boy woke at the sound of someone pounding on his door. He sat up and ran a hand through his hair. The moon was shining in through his window creating shadows in various parts of his room. He heard the knocking stop. He heard a faint whimpering coming from the other side of the door. He got out of bed and walked to his door. He opened the door and caught his sister who had been leaning against the door. He looked down at her and took in her appearance.
“Lizzie, what’s wrong?” Cameron asked picking up his little sister. He noticed how light she was. He knew that even for a seven year old she seemed too light for her age.
“I don’t feel good,” Elizabeth said letting her head rest against her brother’s neck. She usually did this when she was meeting new people or when she didn’t feel good. Cameron put a hand on Elizabeth’s forehead.
“Lizzie, you’re burning up,” Cameron said quietly.
“Where’s daddy?” Elizabeth asked her voice hoarse.
“Daddy’s at work. He should be home soon,” Cameron said setting Elizabeth down on his bed. She shivered. Cameron noticed this and took a blanket out of his closet and wrapped it around her, “lie down and get some rest. When daddy comes home I’ll wake you up.”
“You promise?” Elizabeth asked in a soft voice.
“I promise,” Cameron said kissing his sister’s sweaty forehead. He watched his sister close her eyes. Twenty minutes later the front door opened. Cameron carefully got off the bed so he didn’t wake up his sister. He walked into the kitchen where he saw his dad getting a glass of water, “Hey dad.” Brian turned around.
“Hey Cam,” Brian said looking at his son. He noticed his worried look on his son’s face, “What’s wrong?” Cameron took a deep breath.
“Lizzie came into my room about twenty minutes ago and she was burning up and sweating. She didn’t look too good and she was very light,” Cameron said. Brian’s eyes widened.
“Where is she?” Brian asked.
“My room, sleep-” Cameron said but was interrupted by a voice.
“Daddy?!” Elizabeth yelled from upstairs. Brian and Cameron ran upstairs. They opened Cameron’s door and found Elizabeth on the floor. Brian and Cameron rushed over to her and knelt down.
“Sweetie what happened?” Brian asked.
“I woke up and Cammie wasn’t here. I got out of bed and I got dizzy and fell,” Elizabeth said trying to get up.
"How do you feel now?” Brian asked helping his daughter up.
“I feel horrible daddy,” Elizabeth said. Brian picked up his daughter and put her on his hip.
“Cam, I’m taking your sister to the hospital to get her checked out. If I’m not back in time for you to go to school, go and I’ll fill you in when I get home,” Brian said. Cameron nodded and went over to his bed. He picked up his sister’s blanket and handed it to her.
“I love you Cammie,” Elizabeth said.
“I love you too Lizzie,” Cameron said kissing his sister’s cheek. Brian left Cameron’s room and walked out to the car. He strapped Elizabeth into the back seat of the car and drove off to the hospital.
6 o’clock am
Brian was sitting in the waiting room of the hospital. His head was in his hands. The doctor’s words still ringing through his head: “I’m sorry but her cancer came back. It’s too late for chemotherapy.” He was in the same position two years ago. Two years ago he had found out that Elizabeth had cancer. It had gone away but there was always a chance that it could come back, and it did.
“Mr. Jackson? You’re daughter’s asking for you,” Dr. Michaels, Elizabeth’s doctor, came out to get him. Brian followed Dr. Michaels to Elizabeth’s room. Brian stepped into the room.
“Hey princess,” Brian said walking over to her.
“Daddy, am I sick?” Elizabeth asked. Brian nodded and wiped some hair out of his daughter’s face.
“Yes you are sweetie, but you should get better soon,” Brian said taking his daughter’s hand in his own.
“I’m tired,” Elizabeth said.
“Then get some rest Liz,” Brian said rubbing his daughter’s hand making her slowly fall asleep.
2 o’clock pm
“Sweetie I’m going to go get your brother and bring him by here okay?” Brian told his daughter. Elizabeth nodded her head.
“Hurry back daddy,” Elizabeth said. Brian nodded and kissed his daughters’ forehead, “I love you daddy.”
“I love to too Angel,” Brian said smiling sadly. He left the room. Elizabeth looked around the room. It was white and plain. She hated it.
“Knock knock,” Dr. Michaels said poking his head in.
“Dr. Michaels!” Elizabeth said smiling.
“Hey cutie how are you feeling?” Dr. Michaels asked sitting on her bed.
“I’m tired,” Elizabeth said sitting up. Dr. Michaels nodded his head understandingly.
“That’s understandable. So do you know why you’re here?” Dr. Michaels asked.
“Because I’m sick?” Elizabeth questioned.
“Yes you’re sick but do you know what you have?” Dr. Michaels asked. Elizabeth shook her head no, “Sweetie your cancer came back.”
“Am I going to die?” Elizabeth asked. Dr. Michaels looked at the little girl on the bed.
“I don’t know sweetie,” Dr. Michaels said, “I’ll do everything I can to make you feel better.”
“Promise?” Elizabeth asked. Dr. Michaels nodded his head. Cameron came storming into the hospital room, “Cammie!!!” Cameron put on a smile.
“Hey Lizzie,” Cameron said a hint of sadness in his voice. He walked over and hugged his sister.
“What’s wrong?” Elizabeth asked looking up at her brother.
“Nothing’s the matter Lizzie,” Cameron said. Elizabeth moved over on her bed so her brother could sit. Cameron sat down on the bed and Elizabeth scooted over and let her head rest on Cameron’s chest.
“You’re sad. I can see it in your eyes and I hear it in your voice,” Elizabeth said playing with his fingers. Cameron sighed.
“Don’t worry about it,” Cameron said rubbing his sister’s arm. Cameron started humming the song “Christmas Shoes.” He felt his sister stop playing with his fingers. He looked down and saw her asleep. He smiled. To him, she looked like an angel when she slept. Brian knocked on the door. Cameron looked up.
“She asleep?” Brian asked. Cameron nodded.
“She just fell asleep. Dad did you tell her that she’s not going to get better?” Cameron asked quietly so he didn’t wake up his sister. Brian shook his head no.
“I can’t tell her. She should be happy. She shouldn’t have to be worried about this,” Brian said.
“Dad! How do you think this is going to affect me? Now I have to pretend that I’m okay when I’m really not? Dad I can’t lose someone else,” Cameron said. He had lost his mother a year ago due to cancer.
“Come on, you can come back tomorrow. It’s time for dinner anyway,” Brian said. Cameron slowly moved away from the bed and followed his dad out the door. He paused and looked at his sister in the bed. He felt tears well up in his eyes as he thought of losing his sister.
3 months later
Cameron rushed into the hospital room. His dad had just picked him up from school telling him that Elizabeth wanted him there to sing to her. Cameron knew that something wasn’t right. He stopped short when he saw his sister. She looked awful. She was paler than ever and her eyes looked dull. They didn’t have that sparkle in them.
“Hey Lizzie, how are you feeling?” Cameron asked sitting next to the bed.
“Tired, very tired,” Elizabeth said, “I just wanted to tell you that I love you Cammie. You’re the best big brother in the whole wide world.”
“Liz-” Cameron said tearing up.
“Daddy I love you,” Elizabeth said quietly getting weaker and weaker by the second. Brian fought back the tears threatening to fall.
“I love you too princess,” Brain said barely able to get it out.
“Cammie, can you sing to me? The song you wrote for me?” Elizabeth asked smiling softly. Cameron nodded and cleared his throat.
“An angel from heaven as sweet as can be eyes sparklin’ like diamonds as blue as the sea,” Cameron said. Elizabeth was smiling the whole time. She was staring at her brother. Her breathing was becoming shallow. Cameron noticed and waved his dad over. Brian took hold of Elizabeth’s hand and Cameron held the other one.
“Finish the song Cammie,” Elizabeth said her voice really soft. Cameron took a deep breath.
“A voice just like velvet and a beautiful smile,” Cameron said. Elizabeth smiled softly.
“There’s that smile that we love,” Brian said.
“She closes those beautiful eyes,” Cameron continued to sing. His voice caught in his throat when he saw his sister’s eyes close, “Just to rest for a while.” Cameron noticed that his sister breathed her last breath, “D-dad?”
“Cam,” Brian said going over to his son and brought him into a hug. He rocked his son as he cried on his shoulder. Dr. Michaels came in and sighed. He walked over to the bed and shook his head sadly meaning that she was gone. Brian nodded and rubbed his son’s back, “Come on Cam, let’s go home.”
“Wait I want to say goodbye,” Cameron said choking back a sob. Cameron went over and kissed his sister on her forehead, “I love you Lizzie, so much. It’s not fair that you’re gone. I’m going to miss you. Make sure you say hi to mom for me.” Cameron kissed his sister on the forehead one last time and then walked out the hospital room leaving his father in there with his sister.
“Hey princess,” Brian said taking hold of his daughter’s hand, “you have no idea how much I’m going to miss you. You’ve been so brave though all this. You make sure you listen to you mother okay? I love you princess.” He kissed his daughter’s forehead and walked out of the room. He walked silently next to his son to the car. The ride home was silent.
“Cam, are you going to be okay?” Brian asked Cameron looking at him. He got no answer. He sighed and continued to drive. When he pulled into the drive way Cameron got out of the car, slammed the door and ran into the house. Brian got out and ran into the house after his son. He heard banging from down the hall. He ran down the hall and opened his son’s door. Cameron was tearing his room apart. His bed was messed up, clothes were everywhere, and his desk chair was thrown across the room causing a hole in the wall. Brian went over and grabbed his son and brought him to his chest.
“It’s not fair! She can’t die! She’s too young! She’s only 7!” Cameron said struggling, “I hate you! I hate this! Let me go!”
“Shh…” Brian said trying to get his son to stop struggling. He finally did and all that could be heard was Cameron softly saying ‘Let me go. Please let me go’ over and over again. Brian looked at his son, when he grew quiet, and saw that he was asleep. Brian put his son in his bed and walked out of the room. He looked up at the ceiling and softly said, “Em help me through this."
1 week later
Cameron was sitting in the church not paying attention to the priest. All he could see was the tiny coffin where his sister lays deep within the walls. His vision was blurry due to the tears that gathered in his eyes. Brian looked over at his son and he reached over and patted his knee. Cameron looked at his dad.
“The service is over,” Brian said, “they’re going to burry her now.”
“Dad I can’t,” Cameron said his voice hoarse.
“You have to,” Brian said as he and his son walked out to the car. They got into the car and got behind the car which held Elizabeth’s body. Cameron let the tears fall down his face as they began to drive. The procession drove past the Jackson’s Home so Elizabeth could say her final good byes. Cameron sobbed in the front seat. Brian held back his tears and took his son’s hand and squeezed it.
They got to the cemetery where Elizabeth would be buried, close to her mother. They stopped in front of the place where there was a spot for the casket to go into the ground. Everyone got out of their cars and they were each handed a pink rose, Elizabeth’s favorite flowers. Brian and Cameron walked over to where the casket was placed. Cameron went over and let his fingers run across the polished wood.
Cameron wasn’t listening to the priest talk knowing that it would only make him cry harder. He stood next to his dad and stared at the coffin hoping his sister would scream for someone to let her out. Cameron was shook out of his daze by the sound of them lowering the coffin into the ground. They went up one by one and placed the roses into the ground.
"Dad I want to put mine in front of the stone,” Cameron said quietly. Brian nodded after he threw his flower in. They covered the casket with dirt and placed the headstone in its place. Cameron placed the single pink rose in front of the stone. He fingered the stone and stood up slowly. He turned around and followed his dad to the car. The wind blew and the leaves rustled around the stone.
Cameron turned around and could have sworn he saw his sister standing there waving at him. However what surprised him the most was the person next to her; his mother. Cameron smiled and waved to nothing, “I love you sis, forever and always.” Cameron saw his mom and sister disappear, and as they did, he could have sworn he heard his sister’s giggle. The last thing Cameron saw before he got into the car was the writing on the headstone that he had told his dad to put on there:
‘An angel from heaven taken away from Earth too soon.’
